FURNACE BLAMED IN FIRE

A fire in the 5300 block of Ashby St. Sunday morning destroyed most of a home's contents.

No one was hurt in the blaze, said Jack A. Goldhorn, spokesman for Norfolk Fire and Paramedical Services, but a cat was killed. The two residents, a mother and son, were not home at the time, Goldhorn said.

A faulty floor furnace caused the fire, Goldhorn said. He estimated the damages at $80,000.

It took firefighters about an hour to contain the blaze, he said.
