NO PRIDE IN RODEO

As we progress toward a more civilized society, why must there always be stragglers? Take, for instance, a weekend of events dubbed ``The African-American '96 Festival of Pride,'' in which a rodeo was featured.

Where is the cultural pride or civility in tormenting animals? It is an undeniable fact that animals, human or otherwise, do not enjoy being poked with electric prods, smeared with caustic ointments or spurred with jagged pieces of metal, to name just a few of the enraging methods used in rodeo.

As an African-American woman, I am painfully aware of the inordinate amount of violence rocking this nation. It is appalling to me that there are people who actually take pride in organizing acts of violence.
