MULLET TAKE THE BAIT ALONG NORTHERN BEACH PIERS

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fair during the weekend.

A few sea mullet and spot were hauled from dirty water at Kitty Hawk Pier Saturday and Sunday.

Avalon Pier reported good sea mullet catches Friday night and Saturday afternoon, but slow fishing Sunday.

Fishermen on Nags Head Pier caught fair numbers of sea mullet and some 14-inch gray trout Saturday. A few nice mullet and spot were landed Sunday.

Sea mullet fishing was good on Jennette's Pier Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. A few bluefish and small bottom fish were landed Sunday.

Outer Banks Pier also reported sea mullet action late Saturday afternoon and night. Small blues, sea mullet and small spot were taken Sunday.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught spot, sea mullet, small bluefish, nice croaker and a few puppy drum during the weekend.

Eight big drum were decked Friday night on Avon Pier. A 44-inch drum, sea mullet, spot and a few trout were taken Saturday. Fishing was slow Sunday.

A few sea mullet were landed from Frisco Pier Saturday. Fishing improved Sunday, with lots of sea mullet and 2-pound bluefish taken.

Surfcasters caught scattered small bottom fish, a few bluefish and black drum from Corolla to Oregon Inlet Saturday and Sunday.

Bottom fish, bluefish, a few flounder and a few puppy drum were landed around Oregon Inlet.

A 34-pound drum was hauled from the surf at Ramp 27 Saturday, and a 45-pounder Sunday. Scattered bottom fish and a few puppy drum were taken from Rodanthe to Buxton throughout the weekend.

A few large drum were beached at Cape Point Friday night. Sea mullet were landed steadily Saturday. Scattered bluefish were taken along the north side of Cape Point Sunday, and flounder were caught along the south side. Some sea mullet also were landed in the area.

A few speckled trout were landed by surfcasters near the Frisco Pier Saturday. Small blues, sea mullet, croaker and a few puppy drum were taken along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet during the weekend.

No blue-water action was reported off Oregon Inlet Saturday because of windy conditions. Fishing resumed Sunday, with charters catching plenty of bailer dolphin, scattered tuna and a few king mackerel. A sailfish was released by the Jo Girl.

Hatteras charters landed plenty of king mackerel inside the bad bottom off Hatteras Inlet throughout the weekend. Most of the king mackerel weighed between 18 and 30 pounds, and were taken on live bait.

King mackerel fishing should be good off Hatteras through November.

The water temperature was 63.5 degrees Monday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 70 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
