A 19TH CENTURY FEAST FOR THE EYES AUTHOR WILL EXPLAIN IMPRESSIONISTS' APPETITE FOR DEPICTING CULINARY SUBJECTS

AFTER GLANCING through ``The Impressionist's Table: Recipes & Gastronomy of 19th Century France,'' by Alexandra Leaf (Rizzoli, 1994), you think that, without food, the 19th century would have been without art.

Monet, Manet, Cezanne, van Gogh, and others seemed enthralled with dining scenes, still lifes of food and images of the harvest.

On Friday, you can have lunch with the Impressionist masters - at least vicariously - at a benefit, sponsored by the Virginia Beach Circle of Friends, at the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach.

A cash-bar social begins at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon. After lunch, author Leaf will give a lecture and slide presentation on the Impressionists' fondness for gastronomy. Leaf is an instructor at New York University and a culinary arts specialist, among other achievements.

Leaf will also be available to sign copies of ``The Impressionist's Table,'' which includes classic French recipes.

Tickets are $50 for patrons - who will receive a 1997 Monet calendar and recognition in the program - and $20 for nonpatrons. Reservations must be made by 5 today. Call 460-4366 or 428-5495. Proceeds benefit the Sugar Plum Bakery. ILLUSTRATION: Alexandra Leaf, author of "The Impressionists' Table,"
