MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT CHARITY

The second annual Dan Ward Memorial Golf Tournament will tee off for charity at 1 p.m. Friday at Hell's Point Golf Club near Sandbridge.

More than 100 area golfers are expected to participate in the event, with proceeds benefiting Edmarc Hospice For Children. Last year's tournament raised about $5,000 for Edmarc, which provides home care for terminally ill youths.

``This is a kind of way to keep Dan's memory alive,'' said tournament co-chairman Mark T. Ballard. ``It brings a lot of his friends together for a great cause. We wanted to see the money stay local so that area families in similar situations could receive help and aid.''

Daniel P. Ward, who lived in Virginia Beach and worked at Norfolk Wire & Electronics, was an excellent golfer from his teens on. While attending Maury High School he was runner-up in the state junior championship. Ward died of cancer on March 3, 1995 at the age of 40. Less than a year earlier, already diagnosed with the disease, he won the Eastern Amateur First Flight Tournament at Elizabeth Manor Golf & Country Club in Portsmouth.

``Dan probably had the potential to be one of the best golfers ever to come from this area,'' said Ballard, a lifelong friend of Ward's. ``He had incredible innate ability.''

Ballard said he expects the tournament to raise more than $6,000. The event will be run in a Florida Best Ball format and will be followed by a cook-out. The entry fee is $80 per person. Registration will be taken at Hell's Point Golf Club until noon on Friday. Call 480-3993 for more information. by CNB
