WAYLON SHOULDN'T WAIL

Guy Friddell writes (Oct. 16) that Waylon Jennings doesn't like any of the ``new'' country; that he is ``pure'' country, and likes that type only. Please note:

(1) Until about the time of Willie and Waylon's ``arrival,'' country was as pure as it was. Most young people were listening to rock 'n' roll. But they took the music, fused it with rock 'n' roll and gave a new face to country. So, in an oblique way, he started the change of country which he now seems to decry. How hypocritical!

(2) Were it not for Richie Valens taking his seat on the plane (also filled with other rock 'n' rollers), Waylon would be dead now, just a memory.
