Mary Piland ``Peg'' Godwin, 72, of 312 N. West St., daughter of the late Lloyd Wesley Piland and Mary Lucile Britton Piland, died Oct. 22, 1996.
Mrs. Godwin was a native of Northampton County, N.C. She was a 1940 graduate of Seaboard High School, where she was valedictorian of her class. A 1944 graduate of the Woman's College at University of North Carolina, Greensboro, she received her B.A. in English. She was a retired school teacher and homemaker, having taught in the Chuckatuck, Va., Wilson, N.C., and Ahoskie school systems. She was a member of the Seaboard Chapter of the Eastern Star, a Cub Scout den mother, and was very active in church activities.
Surviving are her husband, Norman Earl Godwin; a son, Norman Earl Godwin Jr. and wife, Robin, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two grandsons, Norman Earl ``Trey'' Godwin III, Benjamin Brooks Godwin, both of Winston-Salem.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ahoskie First Baptist Church with Dr. Jesse J. Croom officiating. Interment to follow in Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, N.C. from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to Ahoskie First Baptist Church, West Main St., Ahoskie, N.C. 27910 or to the American Diabetes Association, 3109 Poplarwood Court, Suite 125, Raleigh, N.C., 27604-1043. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, in charge of services.
