Lee Arthur Gifford, 86, of the 1100 block of North Shore Road, died Oct. 22, 1996, in a local hospital.
Mr. Gifford was a native of Poland. He was the owner of Haygood Managment, Inc., holding company for the Haygood Shopping Center, Haygood Hall Apartments, Old Donation Apartments, and Holly Point Apartments and Shopping Center. Mr. Gifford, often referred to as the Dean of the Tidewater Home Builders and Developers, came to Norfolk in 1951 and immediately became active in the Home Builders Association. He was a past president of the Local and State Home Builders Associations as well as a life member of the Board of Directors for the National Home Builders Association and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1992. He was a member of Ohef Sholom Temple in Norfolk, the Cavalier Golf and Country Club in Virginia Beach, and the Optimus Club.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Goodman Gifford of Norfolk; his son, William A. Hearst of Virginia Beach; his daughter, Patricia A. Mizroch of Virginia Beach; his sister, Norma Kaster of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his brother, Samuel Gisser of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A chapel service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Norfolk Chapel by Rabbi Lawrence A. Forman and Cantor Jennifer Bern-Fogle. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
