RAWLS MUSEUM TO FOCUS ON HOOKED RUGS IN NOV.

If you're into hooked rugs, the Rawls Museum in Courtland is the place to be in November. One day will be devoted to a lecture and demonstration, and several other days are set aside for learning that art.

The Suffolk Art League's annual Juried Exhibition is at the Suffolk Museum. That locale and the Walter Cecil Rawls Library and Museum in Courtland are offering several art classes for just about every age.

SUFFOLK MUSEUM

Suffolk Art League's annual Juried Exhibition, featuring contemporary work by Hampton Roads artists, continues through Nov. 24. Juror is Dr. Andrew Cosentino, former exhibits curator at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Oct. 29: ``Christmas Calligraphy Class.'' 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, through Nov. 12. $30.

Nov. 1, 8 and 22: Hand-building with clay. 10 a.m. $38 for Suffolk Art League members, $42 for others.

Nov. 2: Plaid market basket workshop. 10 a.m. Adult and senior high school students. Bring a bucket or pail, pencil, scissors, 12 to 15 spring type clothes pins, a small towel, a bag lunch. Fee to be announced.

Nov. 2: Intermediate quilting class, 10 a.m. Saturdays to Nov. 23. $25.

Nov. 13 and 15: Preschool Picassos. 10 a.m. Ages 3 to 5. Reception for family and friends at 10 a.m. Nov. 16. $20.

Nov. 16: Museum Concert Series presents an Old Brick Playhouse production, ``Emotion Potion,'' at 11 a.m. The play, about drug avoidance, is for children and adults. Free.

Nov. 16: Museum Concert Series presents an Old Brick Playhouse production, ``Babe Magnet,'' at 7:30 p.m. The subjects are yard sales and barbecues. Free.

Nov. 23: Clay nativity workshops. Session I, ages 7 to 14, at 10 a.m. Session II at 1 p.m. $10 for Art League members, $12 for others. Materials provided.

RIDDICK'S FOLLY

The Virginia Museum exhibit, ``Architecture in Virginia: The Colonial Period,'' continues through Nov. 5.

Nov. 22: ``A Hunting We Will Go,'' through Feb. 22, tells of the local hunting experience. It features old firearms and other equipment, and information about animals hunted locally.

WALTER CECIL RAWLS

``Elements of Design,'' a workshop concentrating on lines, form and color, continues through Nov. 25. Cost for members is $15 a day or $55 for four days. Nonmembers pay $16 or $60. Bring your own supplies.

The 1996 Regional Photography Show continues through Nov. 15.

Oct. 21: ``Hooked on Rugs,'' a lecture/ demonstration on primitive American hooked rugs, 6:30 p.m.

Oct. 29: ``Hooked On Rugs,'' the art of making primitive hooked rugs. Materials provided. 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Dec. 3. $60 for Rawls Museum Art members, $70 for others. Beginners and up.

Nov. 7 and 21: Clay Workshop. Ages 7 to 14. $10 per class for Rawls Museum Art members, $12 for others.

ROCHELLE-PRINCE HOUSE

Continuing with an exhibit detailing the history of Old Jerusalem and Courtland, covering the Nottoway Indians.

SOUTHAMPTON AGRICULTURE

Continuing with an exhibit of old metal toys, most belonging to Frances Kello.

ISLE OF WIGHT MUSEUM

The museum is celebrating its 20th anniversary in November with special events, to be announced later, scheduled for Nov. 16 and 17.

Each of the area's major packing plants is represented in an exhibit, ``The History Of the Meatpacking Industry.''

There are exhibits on archaeology in Isle of Wight County, Hampton Roads fossils, and a Native American display.

There will be a book signing by Segar Cofer Dashiell, author of ``Smithfield: A Pictorial History.'' The date will be announced later.

WAKEFIELD FOUNDATION

Nov. 9: ``Paintings, Drawings, Etc., Etc.'' is an exhibit by Darrell J. Craig. An opening reception will be held at 5 p.m. tonight. Appointments are suggested to view the artwork after tonight. The exhibit continues through Nov. 30.

MILES B. CARPENTER

Nov. 1: A quilt exhibit, ``A Story In Every Stitch,'' continues through Nov. 30. The quilts were made by members of Bacon's Castle Quilters Guild.

Nov. 2: ``Peanut Harvest Time,'' begins at 10 a.m. Peanut shocks will be harvested at 11 a.m. At noon, herbalist Marge Solenberger will discuss herbs in your diet. At 1 p.m., Little Miss Peanut will visit. Daylong activities include shucking, shelling, cracking corn, cider pressing with a 19th century sidemill, activities involving peanut butter, split oak and reed basket making, and pine needle weaving. Food, goodies and crafts will be sold. Entertainment will be provided by Cut-N-Up, Sing Out South, Mark Houser, Swift Creek Cloggers, Southampton Rambler, Marcell Wyche and the Heavenly Voices, Waverly Wesleyans, and Anastasia Anikieva. For the children, there will be a clown and games.

Nov. 4: A four week beginners quilt workshop will be held Mondays at 10 a.m. $20. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
