HARRIET M. COLE

Harriet M. Cole, 84, died Oct. 15, 1996 at her residence at Westminster Canterbury on Shore Drive. She had lived previously at 72nd Street at the Beach.

Harriet Christina McClelland Cole was born on May 14, 1912, in Fredericktown, Ohio. She received her RN degree from Ohio State School of Nursing in 1933, and her B.S. degree in Education in 1935. She later did graduate work at Woman's Hospital, New York, and worked at Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia. Harriet was commissioned as a first lieutenant, U.S. Army during World War II, and served as an operating room nurse in New Caledonia and France. In 1946 she was married to Dr. James Garnett Willis of Fredericksburg, Va. Their two children, James and Mary Francis, died while still young, and her husband, James, died in 1966. Harriet was remarried in 1981 to Rear Adm. William M. Cole, U.S. Navy (ret.) of Virginia Beach, and lived at both Westminster Canterbury and 72nd St. until she suffered a severe stroke in 1990, after which she and her husband resided on Shore Drive. Rear Adm. Cole died in 1994. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church on Pacific Ave.

Harriet is survived by a sister, Mary McClelland Dalrymple of Fredericktown; a brother, John Cooper McClelland of Boca Raton, Fla.; a stepson, William M. Cole II of Virginia Beach; and numerous nephews and nieces. Harriet was greatly beloved and will be very much missed by her family and friends.

The graveside service and burial were conducted on Oct. 19, 1996, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg.
