Regina Mobley, who first dreamt at 17 of anchoring a TV newscast, saw her wishes fulfilled Wednesday when ABC affiliate WVEC picked her to co-anchor the 6 p.m. news with Terry Zahn.
File this one under local girl makes good.
Mobley grew up in Norfolk, attending Granby High School before going on to Norfolk State University. After graduation, she worked at two local radio stations, joined the WTKR newsroom in 1985, and in May 1992 moved to WVEC.
``Ever since I was 17, watching Max Robinson anchor the nightly news on ABC, I wanted to do this,'' Mobley said after Channel 13's general manager, Rick Keilty, announced that she had the job vacated by Cynthia Lima when Lima moved west.
``She's done a fine job as a reporter in this market, and when she began anchoring the news, the viewers responded favorably to Regina,'' said Keilty, who has presided over a makeover of the station's news department.
He recently brought in Keith Connors from Rochester, N.Y., to be news director and then ordered a new set and new on-air look for WVEC's news. Now, the Mobley promotion.
Until this promotion, Mobley was weekend anchor - doing the job solo - and a reporter for WVEC with assignments that took her overseas at times.
The station did not name her replacement on the weekends.
Mobley is 35 and has two children, 9 and 6. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
