WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT SEMINAR SET

The third annual ``Women: Mind, Body & Soul Conference,'' a two-day empowerment seminar for women, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 1 and from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Holiday Inn-Portsmouth Waterfront.

The event is sponsored by Project HAIR (HIV/AIDS Information Resource) in collaboration with the Urban League of Hampton Roads.

The Nov. 2 workshops will offer technical information and provide skills-building exercises to enable African-American women to make safer choices in terms of their health.

Morning workshops include caring for an HIV family member or friend, diabetes treatment and prevention, breast and cervical cancer prevention, heart disease among African-American women, and substance abuse.

Afternoon workshops include optimizing health and effective stress management; understanding the brother; the power of intimacy; recognizing and avoiding domestic violence; and balancing mind, body and soul.

Health-care screenings will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 2. Mammograms will be available for $55. Free mammograms will be given to those who qualify. Call 625-4248 for more information.

Other exams include Pap smears, breast exams, blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings, heart-risk appraisals, sickle cell testing and glucose checks.

Admission includes dinner on Friday, lunch on Saturday and participation in the workshops. Registrations taken through today are $45. Registrations taken Saturday through Nov. 1 are $50. Call 393-1031 for information. by CNB
