WESTERN BRANCH FALL FESTIVAL TO BE BIG CRAFTS EVENT

One of Chesapeake's biggest craft shows of the year will take place Saturday and Sunday.

The Western Branch Fall Festival of Crafts is taking place on from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Western Branch High School, 4222 Terry Drive.

``We have a good turnout and lots of craftspeople every year, but this is shaping up to be our biggest show ever,'' said Amy Simpson, with the sponsoring Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department.

Simpson said the show is a favorite with families.

There's lots of fun for the kids and mom and dad can browse through the creations fashioned by 78 craftspeople. Patrons can pick up unusual items and decorations for the home or get a head start on their holiday gift shopping.

There will be 38 artisans from Chesapeake. The rest of the creative crew hails from Hampton Roads, the Peninsula and other parts of Virginia.

Featured will be toys, needlepoint, country crafts, wood crafts, floral creations, wreaths, decorated fabric, ceramics and jewelry.

``These are all handmade items,'' Simpson said. ``Nothing from kits. All of the crafts here were selected on the basis of craftsmanship and originality. We expect an array of unique creations. If you're looking for that special one-of-a-kind Christmas gift, this is the place to find it.''

And while mom and dad browse, the kids will be entertained with face painting and a special coloring section.

``We're also planning to have walk-around entertainment,'' Simpson said. ``For Saturday, for example, we're planning to have a mime stroll around to entertain children and adults.''

The event is free and Mr. Pig's Barbecue will be on hand to sell lunch, snacks and drinks to hungry and thirsty shoppers. MEMO: For more information about the free craft show, call 382-8464. by CNB
