BANGED-UP SPARTANS HEAD INTO ECSU

The injury bug could have Norfolk State showing a different look Saturday when the Spartans visit Elizabeth City State.

One starter appears to be sidelined, two are questionable and a key reserve is out.

Offensive lineman David Fabrizius, who missed last week's game against Virginia Union, is still nursing a sprained ankle and isn't expected to play. Tight end Ronald Boone (strained shoulder) and fullback DeAngelo Hodges (bruised chest) have missed practice time this week.

Meanwhile, reserve receiver Marty Conner, who sees considerable action when the Spartans go with three wideouts, is out 1-2 weeks with a ruptured bursa sac in his right elbow, just above where he broke his right arm last spring.

NSU head coach Darnell Moore said that receivers Willie Williams and Willie Parker will see time in Conner's spot.

Backup running back George Spencer will slide into Hodges' fullback slot and Scott Bess will start at tight end if Boone is unable to play.

``We'll go with Bess because he's our best blocking tight end,'' Moore said.

MOVING UP THE CHARTS: The Maury Combination, running back John Quinerly and receiver Darius Blount, are readjusting the Spartans' record book this season.

Quinerly has moved into fourth on the Spartans' all-time career rushing list. His 1,667 yards have moved him past Ken Moody (1,619 yards, 1972, 1974-76) and Mikel Waugh (1,608 yards, 1987-90).

Well within reach is Tony Johnson, who ran for 1,797 yards from 1987-90.

Blount needs 46 more receiving yards to surpass Ray Jarvis (1968-71) for second all-time. Blount has 2,165 yards. He is already second in career receptions with 140.

The leader in both categories is James Roe, last season's Eddie Robinson Trophy winner who is playing this season for the Baltimore Ravens.

Roe finished with 239 catches for 4,468 yards.

HONORS: Senior safety Jason Reeves was honored at halftime Saturday when Burger King named him its Division II College Football Scholar/Athlete of the Week.

Burger King donated $10,000 toward Norfolk State's general scholarship fund in Reeves' name.

Burger King's College Football Scholarship program has earmarked $1 million to be donated in the names of 100 scholar/athletes throughout the country this season.

The program was launched at the Kick-Off Classic between Penn State and Southern Cal in late August.

Reeves, an accounting major, has a 3.668 cumulative grade-point average.

STREAK BROKEN: For all the positives that came out of Norfolk State's 38-0 victory over Virginia Union last week, the Spartans' streak of 11 games with at least one interception stopped one shy of the school record.

``We had two good chances to pick off passes,'' Moore said. ``But we scored three defensive touchdowns.

``I'm going to trade interceptions for touchdowns anytime.''

SOLID EXIT: In their last game at Foreman Field, the Spartans drew their sixth largest crowd ever at 26,385. The NSU record is 30,307 for the 1985 homecoming game against Hampton. by CNB
