As Virginians look forward to the Nov. 5 election, they're thinking about the qualities they want in their leaders. Virginians attach roughly equal importance to the candidates' stands on the issues and the candidates' leadership qualities and character. We posed questions about leadership to the candidates for Congress. We'll run one a day up to Election Day.
SENATE
John W. Warner (R)
My tenure on the Board of Trustees of my alma mater, Washington and Lee University, and as administrator of the nation's Bicentennial celebration.
How grateful I am to have graduated in science and engineering from Washington and Lee. I am the beneficiary of Virginia schools, and as a grandfather of two, my service on the Washington and Lee Board of Trustees enabled me to make a small down payment towards providing likewise - hopefully better - for future generations.
Mark R. Warner (D)
In addition to my work with the Health Care Foundation, I have also volunteered time on behalf of a variety of community organizations including the YMCA, Hopkins House, the Alexandria Volunteer Bureau and the United Community Ministries, a private organization comprised of churches and other organizations in Northern Virginia. The volunteers and staff at UCM provide housing assistance, operate food banks and teach English classes, among other activities. There are thousands of programs like UCM across the commonwealth, and I believe they deserve more credit for the good work they do.
2ND DISTRICT
Owen B. Pickett (D)
To the extent that time permits, I've participated in the Lions and Ruritan clubs and was formerly a member of the Lions Club. But they have an attendance requirement that I found impossible to meet so I'm no longer active. I also participate in religious organizations. I support a number of charitable organizations including Meals on Wheels, of which I was a founding member. And I was active in getting the money to construct the Veteran's Memorial in Tidewater.
John F. Tate (R)
I have been an active business partner of the Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk public school systems through the Industrial Cooperative Work Training Program, and the Cooperative Education Marketing Program. These programs are designed to prepare high school students for success in the work force.
3RD DISTRICT
Elsie Goodwyn Holland (R)
Aside from the NAACP, I'm involved in the Links. It's a black women's group with thousands of members. We get involved in humanitarian missions. We've done work in shelters. We had a project with 20 children and were mentors for them. We took them on when they were in the sixth grade and saw them through high school and off to college. Our success rate out of 20 was about 14 or 15. We concentrated on black males. Now we have 40 young ladies in middle school. There are 40 of us and we each adopted a student. We'll mentor them and teach them.
Robert C. ``Bobby'' Scott (D)
I'm active in the March of Dimes, the NAACP and I was a founding member of Peninsula Legal Aid Center. And I was active in the Chamber of Commerce and the local bar association prior to election to Congress.
4TH DISTRICT
Norman Sisisky (D)
I've built a business, and I've been blessed with good fortune that has enabled me to give something back to the community in educational and charitable organizations.
Anthony Zevgolis (R)
I am involved in local service in civic clubs, whose goals are fund raising and activities that are for the betterment of the community and its citizens. I'm a Paul Harris fellow with the Rotary Club, which is their highest honor. I'm a district governor of AHEPA, American-Hellenic Education Progressive Association. The district covers four states, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and the District of Columbia. My district sponsors some 24 educational scholarships a year, and HUD housing for the elderly. We also sponsor a hospital. We're a great philanthropic organization.
