ARGUMENT TURNS FATAL

A 25-year-old Norfolk man was shot to death early Friday, apparently after an argument with his girlfriend led to a confrontation with a nightclub guard.

Richard Overton of the 200 block of W. 34th St. died on the way to a hospital after being shot once in the chest by the guard at Ridley's Restaurant and Lounge, police spokeswoman Elizabeth Jones said.

Authorities gave this account:

Overton and his girlfriend were arguing shortly before 3 a.m. Friday in the parking lot outside the club at 711 22nd St. The guard tried to break up the dispute and Overton turned on him. A friend gave Overton a handgun, Overton approached the guard, and the guard fired a single shot.

In July basketball star Joe Smith of the Golden State Warriors was charged with malicious wounding at Ridley's. A judge dismissed the charge, saying that prosecutors failed to prove that Smith had struck a male dancer with a beer bottle.

Mac Ridley, manager at Ridley's, said Friday that he was upset by the shooting. The club had closed minutes earlier, about 2:30 a.m. From staff and wire reports
