CHESAPEAKE - The Hornets exerted total dominance, racking up 426 yards in total offense, while holding the host Wildcats to minus-3 as they tuned up for next week's showdown at No. 2 Indian River. Deep Creek sacked Great Bridge quarterback Chris Duda five times for 43 yards. The defense also scored once on a 45-yard interception return by Chris Crocker in the second quarter. Teray Frost scored three touchdowns on runs of 44 and 10 yards and a 15-yard reception and rushed for 124 yards on six carries. Nine players carried for the Hornets (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern), four for 50 or more yards. Tyrone Hall had 81 yards on 13 attempts, Demont Dunlap gained 60 yards on seven carries and Kirk Allen ran four times for 51 yards.

SUFFOLK - The Braves (7-0, 5-0 Southeastern) led 14-0 before the offense touched the ball and then scored on their first four possessions in their tuneup for No. 1 Deep Creek. David Selby scored on an interception return, a punt return and two receptions in the game's first 13 minutes as Indian River took a 41-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Antwan Stukes ran for 109 yards on 13 carries and was 6 for 10 with 102 yards and two touchdowns. He ended the scoring with a 1-yard run midway in the third quarter. Fullback Deshone Nichols was carried off the field by a stretcher after spraining his ankle on a tackle late in the third quarter. Braves coach Bob Parker said Nichols had to be examined to determine the severity of the injury. Travis Rawls had 76 yards on 15 carries for Lakeland (5-3, 2-3).

No. 4 Kempsville 17

Cox 14

VIRGINIA BEACH - Alex Lleces rambled 14 yards - bowling over several Falcons defenders along the way - for the winning touchdown with 11:51 remaining in the game. Cox (4-4 overall, 3-4 in the Beach) had held a 14-10 lead for much of the second quarter and all of the third on an 11-yard pass from Ashkon Razaui to Mike McIlravy and a 16-yard run by Leroy Ellsworth. The Chiefs (7-1, 5-1) got a 23-yard field goal from Ryan Quinn and a 16-yard run by Lleces. Meanwhile, Chiefs running back Zeb Clark took charge - finishing as the game's leading rusher with 168 yards on 29 carries. Lleces finished with 74 yards on 14 attempts.

No. 10 Oscar Smith 42

CHESAPEAKE - Lavar Griffin did all his damage in the first half, throwing for four touchdowns and 175 yards as the Tigers spoiled the debut of Hickory's new stadium. The game turned immediately when the Hawks' Milton Gregory fumbled the opening kickoff to Antoine McNair. From there, Oscar Smith (5-3, 4-1) scored 35 points in the first half - scoring on five of its first six possessions - as Griffin threw to four different receivers. Latron Cox had a pair of 33-yard scores, one on the ground and one on a pass play from Griffin, who went to the bench along with most of the Oscar Smith starters in the second half. Hickory fell to 0-8 on the season, 0-5 in the Southeastern.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Charles Wilson passed for three touchdowns and Larron Jones ran for two as the Stallions stormed back from a 13-0 deficit. The Sun Devils (3-5, 3-4) opened their biggest lead when Ronnie Hawkins returned a Green Run fumble 18 yards for a touchdown. The Stallions (4-4, 4-3) took the ensuing kickoff and marched 80 yards in 15 plays, capped by a 15-yard touchdown reception by Arsha Gilchrist to begin a run of 27 unanswered points. Salem closed to 27-20 on a halfback option from Dennis Freeman to Quez Smith that resulted in a 45-yard score with four minutes to go. But Jones sealed it late in the game with a 26-yard scoring run.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Dorman Miner passed for 166 yards and two touchdowns as the Patriots scored on all three of their first-quarter posessions. Miner connected with Mustafa Cook on a 30-yard scoring toss, then hit Steve Tyler on a 42-yard play to put First Colonial (5-3, 4-3 Beach) up 20-0 after a quarter. The Patriots led 29-0 at the half on Lamar King's 55-yard run and a safety from blocking a Marlin punt through the end zone. King had 135 yards combined receiving (two catches for 62 yards) and rushing (five carries for 73). Carlton Winston led First Colonial 88 yards rushing and a touchdown on nine attempts.

CHESAPEAKE - Keith Burnell scored four touchdowns in a little over one half's work as the Bruins recovered from last week's upset loss to Oscar Smith in convincing fashion, holding the Warrior offense to 105 yards total offense and jumping out to a 35-6 halftime lead. Burnell, who left the game after injuring his ankle early in the third quarter, tallied 132 yards on 16 carries, with 120 of the yards and all four scores coming in the first quarter. Rashad Cook added 75 yards and a touchdown for Western Branch (4-4, 3-2), which was never threatened. Quarterback David Johnson only made five pass attempts, but four were completions, including a 7-toss to Darren Walton for a touchdown. Tawan Brown provided the lone points for Nansemond River (1-7, 0-4) on a 81-yard kickoff return in the second quarter.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Aaron Mithcell hit Charles Hughes with a 9-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds remaining to boost the Cavaliers (3-4, 3-5 Beach District) The Knights (0-7, 1-7) had tied it 28-28 with 3:24 to go on Justin Trout's 42-yard field goal. Rob Etheridge led Kellam with 115 yards rushing and three touchdowns. David Johnson had a pair of TDs and 207 yards on 18 carries for Princess Anne.

NORFOLK - Kicker Mike Glover was the difference. His conversion following Greg Trotter's 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter held up as the Commodores (4-4, 2-3) won an Eastern District game. Maury defensive end Victor Bell recovered a Titan fumble at the Lake Taylor 32 and scored nine plays later. Trotter led all rushers with 89 yards on 23 carries and teammate Antonio Williams had 86 yards on 15 attempts. Lake Taylor scored in Jim Mitchell's 18-yard run in the fourth quarter. Lake Taylor threatened in the second quarter, but Ronyell Whitaker's pass off a fake field goal fell incomplete.

NORFOLK - Anthony Cromer returned a kickoff 51 yards and set up a fourth-quarter touchdown to preserve the Comets' win. Granby (3-5, 2-3) led for most of the game, but was unable to put the Presidents away until Dexter Reid scored on a 1-yard plunge with 2:15 left in the game, five plays after Cromer's return. Alex Sunkins and Jasper Owens both scored in the second quarter. Sunkins - whose touchdown came five plays after Eric Osborne recovered a muffed punt snap - finished with 79 yards on 19 carries. Wilson (1-7, 1-4) lost the services of starting quarterback Kavonzo Beamon in the second quarter when he was injured on a drive, but backup quarterback Dennis Self kept the Presidents in the game with a 19-yard pass to Mohanda Whitfield with 4:54 left in the game to cut Granby's lead to 12-6. - Reported by DENNIS HUGHES

COURTLAND - The Indians remained undefeated (8-0, 5-0 in the Bay Rivers) in a free-scoring game that produced 869 yards in total offense and 11 touchdowns. Arthur Porter led the Southampton running game, which piled up 430 yards, with 191 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. One of his TDs was a 90-yard run. Rico Ivey contributed 129 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. York, which fell to 5-3, 3-2, received 262 yards and two touchdowns from Brian Smiley.

Nansemond-Suffolk 63

Isle of Wight 14

SUFFOLK - Sidney Hazelwood rushed for 199 yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries to lead the Saints to a homecoming victory. Warren Carroll combined for 186 yards running, receiving and passing. Carroll had touchdown receptions of 12 and 50 yards and threw another on 10 yards. J.M. Nemish completed 5 of 8 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Monette had three receptions for 19 yards and two touchdowns.

Southampton Academy 44, Halifax Academy 6: The Raiders clinched the Colonial Carolinas Conference regular season title as Jared Webb rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries and brother Adam Webb ran for 117 yards and three touchdowns on 13 tries. Southampton Academy will host a conference semifinal playoff game on Nov. 8.

Surry 54, Windsor 0: Dan Williams ran for three touchdowns and Jerome Haskett threw for three scores as the Cougars rolled. Haskett finished with 198 yards passing, completing touchdown passes of 81 and 17 yards to Tremayne Hill and 36 yards to Shernard Newby. Hill had 127 yards on only three catches. Surry (8-0, 2-0) racked up 442 yards of offense.

Greenbrier Christian 43, Kenston Forest 12: Wayne Griffin ran for 112 yards, had 38 yards receiving and scored three touchdowns for visiting Gators (4-5). Quarterback Tommy Keiper completed 8 of 14 for 100 yards and three touchdowns, one, a 25-yarder to his brother Doug. Ryan Hudgins and Doug Yates made 10 tackles each and Steve Claggions had three sacks.

Franklin 22, Smithfield 0: Lamont Hill returned a 31-yard interception for a touchdown, Diron Newsom scored from 2 yards out and Will Harris hooked up with Antonio Gramam on a 60-yard halfback pass as the Broncos (4-4, 3-2) blanked the Packers.Unbeatens Deep Creek and Indian River dominate their opponents to set up next week's showdown for No. 1; No. 4 Kempsville overcomes Cox on Alex Lleces' 14-yard run in the fourth quarter; Lavar Griffin leads No. 10 Oscar Smith to a 42-7 rout of Hickory by CNB
