TOWN TALK

Rockers in Chesapeake

The Las Gaviotas/Seven Springs Country Club will play host to The Beatles, Roy Orbison and Elvis on Friday.

Not the real things, mind you. After all, Orbison, the King and John Lennon are now singing three-part harmony in that big juke box in the sky. But what you'll see on stage will be as close as possible.

The show, called the ``Rock 'n' Roll Nostalgia Show'' will feature the talents of Deep Creek resident Gary Woolard and his band Exit.

First, Woolard will slick his hair back, don some Ray-Ban shades and a black outfit and come out as Roy Orbison. Woolard has played him many times and has Orbison's operatic tenor down pat. He'll croon all of Roy's biggest hits including ``Pretty Woman,'' natch.

And then come The Beatles, just like the mid-'60s.

``I've been a Beatles fan ever since I saw them in 1964 on `The Ed Sullivan Show,' '' said Woolard, who has been playing in local rock bands since the '60s. ``And our show will be just the way it was back then. Roy Orbison used to open for the Beatles in those days and we're doing it again this Friday.''

After his last Orbison high note, Woolard will quickly put on granny glasses, a Beatle wig, those shiny black boots and one of those black suits with the shiny black collar and the shiny back stripe down the pants and the skinny black tie to become John Lennon. Band mates Danny Lawton will play George Harrison, Tom DeFir will become Paul McCartney and Artie Hobbs will assume the role of Ringo Starr.

``We spent quite a lot of time playing in Virginia Beach this summer,'' Woolard said. ``This is such a big year for the Beatles, anyway, we thought it would be good to add this to our show. We've added a little of this and a little of that to the performance as we perfected it over the summer. Tom's even learning to play the bass left-handed.''

The Beatle wigs were bought at, of all places, a women's wig shop in Norfolk, Woolard said. All was that needed was for one of the band member's wives to comb and pad the wig down until it resembled the Fab Four's famous puddin' basin hair cut.

``It's a pretty cool little show,'' he said. ``We still haven't got their exact instruments but we are using vintage Fender amps. We're getting there.''

And after the Beatles, Woolard and Exit will then assume the role of sidemen as they back Chesapeake police detective Ricky Henderson when he becomes Elvis Presley.

Woolard said the faux Beatles, Orbison and Elvis will be performing to help Chesapeake Boy Scout Troop 413, sponsored by the Hickory Ruritan Club.

``We just bought a new trailer for the boys and now we have to raise money to help pay the yearly registration,'' he said. ``We're just helping get these boys the things they need.''

Tickets to the ``Rock 'n' Roll Nostalgia Show'' are $8 per person and can be purchased at Bailey's Guitars, 316-F S. Battlefield Blvd.

The show takes place from 8 to 10 p.m., Friday at the Las Gaviotas/Seven Springs Country Club, 1201 Clubhouse Road. by CNB
