Several fund-raisers are being planned to help offset the medical expenses of Jo Ellen Good, a Simonsdale resident who will be admitted next week to the Medical College of Virginia for a bone marrow transplant.
Good, 42, has lived with polycythemia, a form of leukemia, for the past 15 years. A sister who lives in Ohio will be Good's donor. After the transplant, Good will be required to stay at MCV for about three months.
The first fund-raiser for Good will be a raffle for a handmade quilt that is valued at more than $1,000. Raffle tickets are on sale for $1 each and are available from Jackie Johnson at 488-7413. The drawing will take place Dec. 1.
The second event is a yard sale, which begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at 714 Windsor Road. To donate items for the yard sale or to get more information, call Belinda Lewis at 488-3200.
Two events being planned for the future include a Brunswick stew dinner and a holiday baby-sitting service for parents who need to do some Christmas shopping alone. The dates for these events will be released soon.
A hairdresser for 21 years, Good is the mother of an 18-year-old son and an 8-month-old grandson. Though insurance is expected to cover a percentage of the cost of the transplant, Good's medications will run anywhere from $16,000 to $20,000 next year, she said.
``The insurance will cover part of that but not very much of it,'' Good said.
