BERTHA M. WEAVER

Bertha M. Weaver, 69, of the 3500 block of Champlain Lane, died Oct. 23, 1996, at River Pointe Rehab and Healthcare Center, Virginia Beach.

Ms. Weaver was an employee of Portsmouth public schools for many years, formerly of Douglas Park.

A native of Garysburg, N.C., she was a member of Noble Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and a faithful member of the women's group, Sunday school and various other auxiliaries. She was a political activist and participated in many political campaigns and electoral duties. She was a former secretary of the Wilson Ward Civic League of Portsmouth and many other community groups and organizations. She was a former president of the Jolly Travelers.

Survivors include her daughters, Alethea O. and Lawrence Dillard of Virginia Beach and Natalie W. Cherry of Paterson, N.J.; a stepmother, Beatrice Prince of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sisters and their husbands, Annie and Ernest Manning and Blanie Vick and Lenora Vick, all of Garysburg; brothers and their wives, Robert and Mary Prince of Richmond, James and Rose Prince of Baltimore, John and Pricilla Prince of Enfield, N.C., and Charles Prince and wife of Brooklyn, N.Y.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Audrey Prince; a devoted niece, Wanda Prince; three aunts, Sarah Thomas, May Powell and Hanna Garner; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in Noble Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Bruce Childs. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Monday. The family will assemble at 2716 Ash St., Portsmouth, the home of Howard and Irene Monroe, at 11 a.m. Monday for the funeral procession to the church.
