John Marshall Long, 71, of South Hill, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 1996, after a long illness with cancer.
Mr. Long was a member of the Providence United Methodist Church, Forksville, for 42 years where he served as a trustee. He was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a medical technician, and a member of American Legion Post 79, South Hill. Mr. Long was a retired purchasing agent for Brodnax Mills.
John is survived by his wife, Alice Bennett Long, and a son, Sidney Marshall Long, both of South Hill; a daughter, Dr. Linda Marie Long and son-in-law, Dr. Dan Kothmann, both of Chesapeake; a brother, Edward G. Long of Lawrenceville; two sisters, Mattie Sue Brooks of Boydton and Ester Soloman of Lawrenceville; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. today at the Providence United Methodist Church by the Rev. Anderson D. Goodson and the Rev. Steven K. Allsbrook, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family received friends Monday at Farrar Funeral Home, and they request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the John M. Long Memorial Fund, Providence United Methodist Church, 1222 Wilson Road, Forksville, Va. 23950.
