State Secretary of Transportation Robert E. Martinez will speak at the next Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce meeting, Wednesday at the Holiday Inn Greenbrier.
Martinez will speak on transportation funding, specifically on how the department will handle shortfalls.
In addition, Martinez has been asked to discuss local transportation issues involving Route 168, the Southeastern Parkway and other regional transportation plans.
``We look at different issues at all of our membership meetings, and one of our biggest concerns lately has been regionalism. And transportation is certainly a part of that,'' said Karen Motil, manager of program development with the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.
Next year, the chamber plans monthly membership meetings on issues facing the local business community, such as technology, sports development, regionalism, women and minorities, defense, retail, environment and airline safety.
``We plan on having a top-notch speaker at all those meetings,'' said Motil.
Last month, Mike Burton, the director of Metro Portland, spoke to chamber members on the problems and solutions the Portland area faced when the community embraced regionalism.
On Dec. 11 at the Founders Inn, George Shinn, owner of the Charlotte Hornets, will address chamber members on regional sports issues. Shinn holds the National Hockey League rights in Virginia.
Wednesday's membership meeting costs $15 per person for members, $20 for non-members. Tables of 10 can be reserved for $135 for members and $180 for non-members. For reservations call 664-2558.
