Current from a high-voltage power line badly burned a man Monday morning when scaffolding he was moving touched an overhead wire, police said.
The accident happened near Thurston Avenue and Baker Road just after 8 a.m., police said. Tyrone Amaker and a co-worker were moving a 24-foot-tall section of scaffolding on Baker Road while working on a project in the Airport Industrial Park, police spokesman Mike Carey said.
When the man turned the scaffolding onto Thurston Avenue, the metal frame touched the line carrying nearly 20,000 volts.
The shock badly burned Amaker, 32, of the 1100 block of Hillside Road in Norfolk, who was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
He was listed in fair condition with third-degree burns. Carey said Amaker worked for a Virginia Beach company named Total Building Maintenance Ltd.
A similar accident killed a 33-year-old construction worker in June.
