The Granby Municipal Building has won the Virginia Downtown Development Association's Award of Excellence for the ``Most Outstanding Adaptive Reuse.'' The award was announced Oct. 22 at the Virginia Municipal League's annual conference in Roanoke.
Located in the Downtown Historic Overlay District, the building exhibits classical features of early 20th century commercial architecture. Since the closure of Rices-Nachman Department Store in 1985, the building remained vacant until purchased by the city in 1991 to provide cost-effective renovation while consolidating city services in a central location and serving as a catalyst for the revitalization of Granby St.
Total rehabilitation costs for the 100,000-square-foot project were approximately $9 million, with financing and funding supplied by the city through its Capital Improvement Program over a three-year period. by CNB
