Four Norfolk residents were winners in the Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival. Timothy McClellan won the Norfolk Artist Award and $300 sponsored by the Norfolk Commission on the Arts and Humanities for his painting. Hal Weaver won the Artists' Choice Award and $150 sponsored by TC Consultants for his mixed media sculpture.
Jeanne Boardman Knorr won an award of Merit and $200 sponsored by About Face Hair Designers, Cavalier Land, Haircrafters, and Life Savings Band for a collage. Jessica Humphrey won first prize of $150 in the Futures Awards: College Student Exhibition, which was sponsored by Calvin & Lloyd, for her painting.
Phyllis B. Chernitzer, assistant passenger transportation officer for the Personnel Support Activity at Norfolk Naval Base was awarded the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award by the commanding officer for her outstanding professional achievement in providing transportation services to Navy official travelers, including support of personnel based at Guantanamo, Cuba.
Edward Lee White Jr., a Norfolk native and a Maury High School graduate, was honored Oct. 14, as Churchman of the Year by the Religious Heritage of America.
MILITARY PEOPLE
Marine Pfc. Ray A. Speller, son of Shirley A. Stewart and Ray A. Speller Sr. of Norfolk and a 1995 graduate of Granby High School, was promoted to his present rank while serving with the Marine Aviation Training Support Group, Naval Technical Training Center at Meridian, Miss.
Marine Master Sgt. Hamilton J. MacGregor, a 1972 graduate of Maury High School and the son of Stephen H. MacGregor Jr. of Norfolk, has received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.
The medal recognizes the service member's honest and faithful service during a three-year period. To earn it, MacGregor achieved and maintained a satisfactory level of performance and an unblemished conduct record.
MacGregor is assigned to the Headquarters Battalion at Henderson Hall at Arlington, Va.
Marine Pfc. Kimberly A. Fleming, daughter of Constance Fleming of Norfolk, has reported for duty with the 3rd Support Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group at Okinawa, Japan.
Marine Pfc. Jason M. Dean, son of Robert E. and Rhonda C. Dean of Norfolk and a 1995 graduate of Maury High School, has completed basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, and was promoted to his present rank.
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Ronald P. Schafer, whose wife, Ellen, is the daughter of Arthur and Nan Bousquet of Norfolk, recently graduated from the Defense Photography Course at the Naval School of Photography, at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Fla.
CAMPUS NOTES
Ray Allen, a doctoral student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Old Dominion University, presented a paper on his research on the prevention of electrical breakdown in electron accelerators. The committee of the 1996 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena awarded him $300 to attend the international conference in San Francisco in October.
Howard M. Pardue, a resident of Norfolk, has joined Norfolk Public Schools asthe senior director of personnel. He came to Norfolk from Georgetown, Ky., wherehe was vice president for Human Resources at Georgetown College. Previously he was the vice president/managing director of the Winston-Salem and Greensboro, N.C., offices of Right Associates, an international career and human resource consulting company.
Dr. Maxine B. Allen, associate vice president for academic affairs and director of institutional research and planning, has been named the Norfolk State University 1996 Administrator of the Year, an award presented annually to the best administrator at the university by the NSU Association of Educational Office Professionals.
Recipients of the award are nominated by members of the organization and must be strong supporters of the association, innovative supervisors, able to maintain high levels of staff productivity, have an exceptional management style, have fairness to staff members and exhibit professional decency said Jaqueline J.
