NANSEMOND RIVER HIGH HOSTS WEEKEND ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW

The annual Suffolk Arts & Crafts Show will be held Saturday and Sunday.

During its first 18 years, it was held at the National Guard Armory. It moved last year to Nansemond River High School, where it will be held again this year.

``We outgrew the Armory,'' said Jan Thomas, recreation supervisor of Suffolk Parks, Recreation and Facility Management, sponsor of the show. ``We're very pleased with the community support.''

She said, ``Last year, we had a large crowd, and everyone seemed to have full shopping bags as they left.''

This year, visitors can fill their bags with such things as paper twist angels, jewelry, ceramics, folk art, decorative wreaths, wooden items, quilts and more.

If you don't buy a quilt, maybe you can win one. Members of the Suffolk Senior Center and the Whaleyville Seniors will raffle quilts, and sell crafts.

Food also will be sold at the show, including barbecue and chocolate chip cookies provided by the Cafeteria Workers Association.

There also will be something for the children. ``Sandy Pals,'' a sand artist, will help them make necklaces and bottled sand designs; Smiley the Clown will do face painting and tattooing - the removable kind, of course.

Members of the Birdsong Recreation Center's IN-STEP team will sponsor a gift wrapping booth to help them raise money for new uniforms.

The 16 high school girls, who live near the recreation center, must maintain a A-B average in school and perform community service projects, to remain on the team.

Among their activities since they were organized last year was participation in the Suffolk Christmas parade and the Norfolk State University Homecoming Parade.

``The program was organized by Lakita Fraiser, a Norfolk State student, who wanted girls to be involved in an after-school program and get interested in going to college,'' Thomas said. ``They've visited Norfolk State, ODU and other colleges and universities.'' ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
