LOCAL GUYS ON THE COLLEGE GRIDIRON

Even without making a catch, pass or tackle, a few of the area's top former high school stars are making their presence felt in the college ranks. In fact, some of these players' main jobs are preventing catches, passes or tackles.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy alumnus Glenn Rountree is playing his third year onthe Clemson offensive line. The Tigers, who were idle last week, defeated Georgia Tech 28-25 on Oct. 19 to improve to 4-3.

Rountree was named to the 1996 All-American Farm Football Team in Successful Farming magazine's October issue.

Twenty-four players were named to the team and $1,000 is donated in the name of the athletes to the colleges' general scholarship funds. The selected players were featured in a six-page spread.

The team was established in 1995 to honor collegiate athletes who call a farm or ranch their homes.

Rountree, an agronomy major, was named to the ACC's pre-season all-conference team.

Former Southampton lineman Sandee McDonald is playing on the offensive line at Bowie State. The Bulldogs dropped another tight game, 13-12 at Fayetteville State on Saturday, and fell to 3-5.

MacDonald's former Indian teammate Gary Warren is playing tight end at Virginia State and is used primarily as a blocker. The Trojans defeated Virginia Union 33-7 as Virginia St. improved to 6-3 and remained 1/2-game behind Norfolk State (6-2, 6-1) in the conference standings.

North Carolina State defensive end Bobbie Cotten has become a bigger contributor. The Windsor alumnus has started the last two games, including a 62-14 loss at Virginia two weeks ago. Cotten has 14 tackles on the season.

Hampton middle linebacker Darrell Flythe continued to rack up the tackles as the Pirates defeated South Carolina State 20-14 last Saturday and won for the third time in four games. The Nansemond River alumnus was in on 16 tackles against the Bulldogs. He had 12 solo stops and has recorded double-digit tackles in each of the Pirates (4-3) games. Flythe also has a pair of interception on the season.

Against Florida A&M on Oct. 5, Flythe scored his first touchdown of the season as the Pirates lost in six overtimes 59-58. Flythe returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown as Hampton had taken a 14-7 lead into halftime. For the season, the senior linebacker has 109 tackles, tops in the conference.

Hampton cornerback Donald Turner, a Nansemond River graduate, had a season-high eight tackles against Delaware State and has two interceptions for the season.

Wide receiver Linwood Joyner has gradually added up the yardage for struggling Ferrum (0-6).

The Franklin graduate had just four catches for 51 yards as Ferrum fell to Methodist 24-17 in overtime. For the year, Joyner has caught 18 passes for 215 yards.

Richmond running back Minoso Rodgers (Windsor) had 78 yards on 23 carries as Richmond (2-6) fell to Villanova 20-3 on Saturday. Against James Madison the previous week, Rodgers ran for 156 yards and one touchdown. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
