I went to the Dole-Kemp rally on Oct. 19 at Nauticus to show my support for my choice for president. Also present were a few people from PETA, holding signs that read ``Tax Meat,'' and handing out leaflets that explained the reasons why they think there should be a tax.
``More taxes?'' I thought, but I took the leaflet and read it. There was no anti-Dole message in it, so I don't understand why some of the Dole supporters there treated the PETA people as though their signs and literature were claiming an allegiance to Satan himself. I saw one young man grabbed and held by two men while a third ripped his sign from his hands and tore it in half.
Mr. Dole often refers to the Republican Party as ``the party of Lincoln.'' Lincoln once said, ``There is no grievance that is a fit object of redress by mob law.'' I believe it is the type of people who would tear one man's beliefs from his hands, who would try to silence a man's voice in a public place, that may be one of the reasons why Mr. Dole is down so far in the polls. With supporters like these, who needs enemies? They are mistaken if they believe Mr. Dole would condone such behavior.
