RICHMOND P. CARR

Richmond P. Carr, 86, died Oct. 29, 1996, at Bayside Health Care Center, Virginia Beach.

A teacher, school administrator and a scholar of public school education, Mr. Carr was born in Currie, N.C. He earned his bachelor's degree in English and social science from Shaw University, Raleigh, N.C., in 1932, a master's degree in secondary school administration from New York University. He was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, Tau Sigma Rho debating society and Kappa Delta Pi society in education.

His teaching career which began in 1933 in the North Carolina public schools was interrupted by World War II. He served as an artillery officer in the Pacific area during that conflict. After being discharged from the armed forces, he returned to the N.C. public school system. He viewed children as the best hope for society and was fond of saying, ``Every young person who seeks and hopes for the best in life must have a vision of what is desirable, design a plan to realize this vision and pursue the plan with a purpose. These form the dynamics of achievement.''

After 32 years, he retired from the North Carolina school system in Belhaven during 1971, having served as principal from 1957 to 1971. He subsequently taught adult education in Newark, N.J., for five years and was employed by the New York City school system. His last retirement came in 1993 from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Carr; two stepchildren, Sharon Roberts of Queens, N.Y., Joseph Roberts Jr. of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; a brother, Franklin Carr; a sister, Ruth C. Wood; a sister-in-law, Helen D. Carr; six nephews, Emory Carr, Charles Wood Jr., Harry Wood, Michael Wood, Oliver M. Wood and Robert Shuffett; five nieces, Jeanie W. Shuffett, Shannon Wood, Paige Wood, Robin Shuffett and Lynn Wood; and a step-great-granddaughter, Toya F. Roberts. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Frances Carr Clark of Rich Square, N.C.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
