A SLOW DAY'S FISHING ALONG THE OUTER BANKS

Pier fishing was slow along the northern beaches Wednesday.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported several under-sized speckled trout landed and released. A few 2- to 3-pound speckled trout, small bluefish, a false albacore and a 7-pound black drum were caught on Avalon Pier during the morning, but fishing was slow in the afternoon.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier landed a keeper speckled trout and some small bottom fish during the morning, but there was no action the rest of the day. A few small bluefish were taken in the morning on Jennette's Pier, but little action was reported during the afternoon.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught a few speckled trout and some small bluefish early in the day. A few striped bass also were released. Afternoon fishing was slow.

South of Oregon Inlet, a few bluefish, sea mullet, small black drum and a few flounder were landed during the day. A 40-pound drum was taken from the end of the pier around 1 p.m.

Avon Pier reported a few small bottom fish landed off and on during the day. Fishing was slow in Frisco Pier, with only a few sea mullet and a few small puppy drum taken.

Surfcasters landed a few small bottom fish and an occasional speckled trout from deeper sloughs along the northern beaches.

A few blues and small bottom fish were landed around Oregon Inlet. Some good catches of sea mullet have been reported by anglers fishing from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge at night.

Small bluefish, a few puppy drum and black drum were taken by surfcasters along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. A few puppy drum and toadfish were beached at Cape Point.

Some sea mullet and small bluefish were landed in the surf from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet Tuesday night. Fishing was slow in the area Wednesday.

Yellowfin tuna fishing was fairly good off Oregon Inlet, with boats catching 10 to 12 fish each. The best action was between the 40640 and the 40700 Loran lines. Some 8- to 10-pound king mackerel also were landed at Wimble Shoals during the morning.

Blue water action off Hatteras was slow. Charters managed to land a handful of king mackerel and a few wahoo and tuna.

The water temperature was 64 degrees Wednesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 68 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
