Bob Dole is clinging to a narrow lead over Bill Clinton in their race to carry Virginia in Tuesday's presidential election, according to a new poll.
Of the 806 registered voters who participated in the survey, 45 percent said they were backing Dole, the Republican, and 42 percent said they supported Clinton, the Democrat.
Five percent said they would vote for Reform Party candidate Ross Perot, and 8 percent said they are undecided. The poll was conducted from Oct. 25 to Oct. 27 by Mason-Dixon Political/Media Research of Columbia, Md.
The poll shows Clinton to be generally unpopular; 40 percent have a favorable impression of the president, while 46 percent said they have unfavorable feelings toward him. Dole's ratings were 46 percent positive and 36 percent negative.
The poll showed Clinton holding small leads in Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and Southwest Virginia. Dole led in all other areas.
