HEARTS GLAD TO SEE THE LABOON

ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by Huy Nguyen/The Virginian-Pilot

Seen through a heart-shaped balloon, Wendy Smallwood awaits the

arrival Friday of the Norfolk-based guided missile destroyer Laboon,

one of two Navy ships to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles into Iraq

in September. On the ship is Wendy's mother, Lt. j.g. Rhonda Taylor.

Cmdr. Mark Danley, who commands the Laboon, called his 340-member

crew the ``finest.'' Also returning Friday was the oiler Platte,

whose 240-member crew is commanded by Capt. Beulah C. Galvin.
