Gov. George Allen on Friday postponed a decision on a new judge for Norfolk Circuit Court. Instead, he is expected to make the appointment Monday.
Earlier this week, Allen's office said he would make the appointment by the end of the week. On Friday morning, however, Allen was distracted by an unexpected ruling by the Virginia Supreme Court regarding the budget.
Twelve candidates applied for the Norfolk judgeship. Allen narrowed the field this week to four finalists: J.P. Fulton, Carter Furr, Joseph Massey and Wayne Nunnally. The judgeship came open last month when Judge Luther Edmonds resigned.
Allen can appoint a temporary replacement, but the General Assembly will make the permanent appointment when it meets in January or February. There is pressure, therefore, to find a candidate acceptable to both the Republican governor and Norfolk's Democratic legislators.
