A newcomer to politics, Booth won his first battle in the spring when he defeated Commissioner Sammy Smith in the primary. The Currituck County native said one of his biggest motives in seeking office is to help put Dare County schools at the top nationally.
``Education is so important to so many of the problems in this county,'' Booth said. ``What I would like to see happen is the whole community setting objectives as far as education is concerned.''
He also believes development must be planned carefully.
``It's going to be done with great gnashing of teeth,'' he said. ``Obviously, you can control development through zoning but you can't effectively take people's property away from them by zoning the use away.''
He said the simplest way to inhibit undesirable commercial growth may be by removing the demand.
``We can vote with our feet,'' Booth said. ``We cannot patronize those facilities.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
