A 42-year-old woman who was thrown from her car when it crashed through a guardrail on Witchduck Road late Thursday is in critical condition in a hospital, police said Friday.
The woman had been drinking and was speeding when her car clipped a curb on North Witchduck Road near Sullivan Boulevard, police spokesman Mike Carey said. The car veered out of control and cut through part of a driveway before it hit a cul-de-sac guardrail and vaulted into the air.
The car settled on its roof more than 80 feet from where it hit the guardrail, Carey said. The driver, Belinda A. Hewitt, of the 3600 block of Alcott Road, was thrown from the car. She was badly hurt and was taken to the trauma center at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
The crash happened around 9:34 p.m. Police said Hewitt was not wearing a seatbelt.
