IF FISHING ISN'T YOUR THING, THE PIERS - AND THE SURF - WERE THE PLACE FOR YOU

Pier fishing along the Dare coast was slow Friday.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported a few pigfish, sand perch, small bluefish, black drum and a few keeper speckled trout taken during the day.

A few sea mullet were landed on Avalon Pier Thursday afternoon. Several keeper speckled trout were decked Friday morning, and a handful of small bottom fish were taken in the afternoon.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught a few very small bottom fish and trout off and on during the day.

A few speckled trout were landed early in the morning from Jennette's Pier, but the rest of the day was slow.

Outer Banks Pier fishermen also caught a few trout during the morning but saw little action later in the day.

South of Oregon Inlet, fishing was very slow on Rodanthe Pier and Avon Pier. Only a few flounder were caught on Frisco Pier.

Surf fishing was generally slow along the northern beaches and around Oregon Inlet.

A few sand perch and other small bottom fish were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.

A few sea mullet and flounder were caught by surfcasters along the beach south of Cape Point.

Scattered bluefish, sea mullet and toadfish were beached in the Hatteras Inlet area.

King mackerel fishing was good off Oregon Inlet around Wimble Shoals. Most of the fish were taken down deep on planers and spoons. Good catches of yellowfin tuna were reported from the point to the 40400 Loran Line.

Mackerel action was good off Hatteras around the Avon Rocks. Most of the fish were taken on live bait. Charters landed some nice wahoo and a few dolphin near the rockpile, and 40- to 50-pound tuna around the 40350 Loran Line.

The water temperature was 64.5 degrees Friday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 70 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
