After 2 1/2 weeks of practice, Old Dominion's basketball team will be on display for the first time tonight at 8 in the annual Blue-White exhibition game at the ODU field house.
The men's game will be preceded by a women's exhibition game at 6 p.m. The women's team, ranked No. 1 by one national publication, is led by preseason All-Americans Ticha Penicheiro and Clarisse Machanguana.
Tickets are available at the door and cost $3 for adults, $2 for children.
``It will be fun and it's the players' first chance to be on public view, but we're really anxious to get to the point where we can use our total team against an opponent,'' coach Jeff Capel said.
With only 10 scholarship players, the Monarchs won't be doing much substituting. ODU does have four walk-ons, however, who undoubtedly will log their most playing time of the season tonight.
``I call them all `Hey you!' '' Capel said of the walk-ons.
Capel said this week that practice has been competitive and he likes the flexibility he has to use different combinations, with all but a couple of players able to play multiple positions.
Capel described the competition for most positions as wide open, and said meticulous charts are kept of who is performing in each practice, and will also be kept in exhibitions tonight and the following two Saturdays.
``The guys who are up on the charts are going to play,'' Capel said. ``It's a free enterprise society. We feel we have 10 guys who we could put on the floor in any combination.'' by CNB
