Edward Barnett Pope, 83, mayor emeritus of Washington, died Oct. 31, 1996, in his home.
Mr. Pope was born in Wilkes County, Ga., and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a self-employed businessman and mayor of Washington for 41 years. He was a member of Washington First Baptist Church and lived most of his life in Washington. He was formerly in the cattle and lumber business and was a member and past president of Kiwanis Club since 1939. He joined the Masonic order in 1952 and became a Shriner in 1955. He served as president of the Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce in 1975 and 1976 and was president of the Georgia Cattleman's Association in 1976. He was married to the late Ruth Carney of Churchland.
Survivors include his wife, Bernadene Voorhees Pope of Washington; sons, Edward Barnett Pope Jr. and Marion Pembroke Pope III, both of Washington; a stepson, John H. Cook III of Alpharetta, Ga.; a daughter, Charlotte P. Simmons of Washington; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Coston of Fairdealing, Mo.; his brother, William A. Pope of Atlanta; nine grandchildren, Ruth Taylor Simmons of Atlanta, Robert A. Simmons Jr. of Statesboro, Ga., Elizabeth P. Simmons of St. Augustine, Fla., Julie Simmons of Washington, Katherine P. Gentry of Athens, Ga., Edward Barnett Pope III of Greenville, S.C., Jenny Pope of Washington, Marion Pembroke Pope IV of Washington and Sunshine Carney Pope of Lavonia, Ga.; two stepgrandchildren, J.H. Cook IV and Natalie Cook, both of Alpharetta.
He was predeceased by his parents, Marion Pembroke Pope and Elizabeth Barnett Pope.
A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. today in Washington First Baptist Church by the Rev. Albert Huyck and the Rev. John Via. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Edward B. Pope Memorial Fund, c/o the First Baptist Church, Washington, Ga. 30673. Active pallbears will be John Rex, John Gentry, Robert Simmons Jr., Pembroke Pope IV, Edward B. Pope III, Carlton Norris, Bob Dinneweth and Cliff Adams.
