Last year, hundreds of people sent hundreds of thousands of dollars to The Virginian-Pilot for just as many reasons.
Some sent money anonymously; some sent it to honor a friend or remember a loved one. But every dollar supported a common cause: The Joy Fund.
The $300,491 collected last year helped about 30,000 children have a merry Christmas.
This year, Joy Fund coordinator Phyllis Parker has high expectations for an equally successful year.
Already, numerous civic organizations have signed up to sponsor benefits, including Salem High School's 26th annual Dance for Joy and the 29th annual Charity Bowl football game Thanksgiving Day at Union Kempsville Station.
Each year, Joy Fund recipients are selected from a list of needy children compiled by local clergy, school principals and welfare agencies. Before the holidays, the Joy Fund mails cash coupons redeemable for clothing or toys to the children's parents or guardians.
Since 1934, the Joy Fund has helped more than a million children. All donations go directly to gifts for needy families. MEMO: Contributions may be sent to The Joy Fund, c/o The
