ADMIRALS' RALLY FALLS A GOAL SHY RICHMOND TAKES 4-0 LEAD, FENDS OFF FLURRY OF FISTS AND GOALS.

Although the Admirals finished with a 32-26 advantage in shots on goal, the Renegades held on for a 4-3 victory, their fifth straight.

Admirals coach John Brophy promised two workouts today in preparation for his team's next game, Tuesday night in Raleigh.

``We played pretty good for the last two periods,'' Brophy said. ``But pretty good is no good when you lose by one goal.''

The Renegades, already leading 2-0 midway through the first period, added two more goals - by Mike Taylor and Jason Wright - in an 82-second span late in the first period. That seemed to raise the Admirals' collective blood pressure.

First, Aaron Downey challenged Richmond's Trevor Senn at center ice, earning each a five-minute major with 1:17 remaining in the period. The second period began with more of the same as Alain Savage and Richmond's Jay McNeill dropped gloves.

Then Hampton Roads scored, with Randy Pearce netting his sixth of the season 2:28 into the period.

Dominic Maltais and Richmond's Mike Harding went at it next, and the second period dragged on with penalty after penalty. But the Admirals threw in another goal as Savage one-timed a Maltais crossing pass on a rush to make it 4-2 with 49 seconds left in the second.

When the period ended with the Admirals going on the power play with five seconds remaining on a David Dartsch hooking penalty, Hampton Roads went to the locker room in a much different mood than after the first period.

The Renegades, behind goaltender Grant Sjervin, weathered that Admirals power play and a 5-on-3 midway through the third.

Hampton Roads got its third goal with 51 seconds left when Andy Weidenbach scored on a rush down ice.

Darryl Paquette was pulled from goal with 36 seconds left, . Hampton Roads had three faceoffs in the Renegades' end but couldn't find the back of the net.

``Slow starts seem to be our whole problem this season,'' Pearce said. ``It's something we have to work on.'' by CNB
