PARENTING WORKSHOP OFFERS VARIETY OF TOPICS

THERE'S NO graduate degree in parenting, only continuing education.

The morning the youngest child refuses to put on her socks. The afternoon the middle-schooler balks at improving a school project. The evening the teen-ager asks if you ever tried marijuana.

A less trying and more formal class in what's been called as the hardest and most important job in the world is scheduled for Nov. 16. A parenting workshop called ``Understanding the '90s Child'' is being offered free to parents and child-care providers at Indian River Middle School in Chesapeake.

Participants will be able to choose from a variety of workshops taught by professionals in the fields of education and mental health. Naomi Griffith, a child advocate from Decatur, Ala., will deliver a keynote address called ``Parenting the Aggressive Child.''

Other workshop topics include: Your Child and Television, Preventing Eating Disorders, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, Choosing Child Care, Parenting through Financial Stress, the Blended Family, the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Child, What They're Not Saying: Looking into Art, When is Sadness Depression, Raising Self-Esteem in Home and Classroom, the Effects of Divorce on Children, Discipline Techniques That Work.

The parenting workshop is being sponsored by Family Services of Tidewater, Places and Programs for Children, St. Mary's Infant Home's Pride in Parenting, Catholic Charities and the Southeastern Association for the Education of Young Children.

A separate conference will be conducted for professionals who work with families on Nov. 15 at the Chesapeake Holiday Inn.

That conference will feature Griffith, and Michael P. Nichols, a College of William and Mary professor and expert in short-term family therapy.

The parenting workshop is free but space is limited. For reservations and information about both conferences, call 622-7017, ext. 227, and leave your name, address and phone number. ILLUSTRATION: WANT TO GO?
