WEEKEND FISHING IMPROVES WITH WEATHER

Strong winds and rough seas kept fishing to a minimum along the Dare coast Saturday.

Conditions improved Sunday, as did the fishing at several locations.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported little action Saturday. Fishing also was slow Sunday, with only sharks and skates taken.

Both fishermen and fish were scarce Saturday on Avalon Pier. Plenty of skates, a sea mullet and a bluefish were landed Sunday.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught small speckled trout early Saturday morning, but nothing during the remainder of the day. Plenty of skates, a few sea mullet and a few small trout were taken Sunday.

Jennette's Pier reported no action Saturday, but on Sunday, several sea mullet weighing as much as 1 3/4 pounds, toadfish, black drum and two striped bass over the 28-inch minimum size were landed.

Skates, a few very small spot, and tiny bluefish were caught from Outer Banks Pier Saturday. Small flounder, speckled trout, gray trout and small bluefish were taken Sunday. A 22-pound striped bass was landed on cut bait by David Blough of Denton, Md., Sunday.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported only a handful of small flounder and bluefish taken Saturday. A good run of keeper puppy drum and 4- to 6-pound black drum developed Sunday afternoon, but the haul was short-lived.

A few toadfish and small spot were caught from Avon Pier Saturday. Twenty big drum were landed from the end of the pier Saturday morning. Action was nil the remainder of the day.

Fishing was slow Saturday on Frisco Pier. A few medium-sized sea mullet, small flounder and toadfish were taken Sunday. by CNB
