POLICE ARREST MAN IN MANTEO RAPE CASE INVOLVING A CHILD

Sheriff A.L. ``Bert'' Austin reported Monday the arrest on Oct. 30 of Oren O. Harris, 51, of Manteo, on a charge of first-degree rape. The victim was 11 at the time of the offense two years ago.

The female victim recently told a friend about the incident and he told his parents. The parents contacted county officials.

Harris is in custody under a $50,000 bond and is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on Nov. 12.

The sheriff also said:

Officers are investigating a break-in at a cottage on Snowgeese Drive in Duck. Someone reportedly entered the cottage and removed about $650 worth of electronics. In addition, about $175 damage was done to the cottage.

On Oct. 30, Wesley B. Branch, 35, of Salvo, was arrested on charges of breaking, entering and larceny, and possession of stolen property in connection with a breaking and entering that occurred on Oct. 5 in Salvo in which cash was taken from a residence. Branch was released after posting a $10,000 bond and is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on Nov. 12.
