IT IS THAT TIME AGAIN TO CHOOSE OUR LEADERS POLLING PLACES WILL BE OPEN FROM 6:30 A.M. TILL 7:30 P.M. ACROSS THE STATE.

Months of campaigning have come to an end, and North Carolina voters have 13 hours today to pick the men and women they want in local, state and national offices.

Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. in the Albemarle and across the state. At stake are jobs for the famous and jobs for the little-known.

Hottest statewide race is for the U.S. Senate, where Democratic challenger Harvey Gantt is trying again to unseat Republican Sen. Jesse Helms, North Carolina's Mr. Conservative.

The usually overlooked secretary of state race also has drawn attention, with Republican Richard Petty of stock-car fame hoping to outrun Democrat Elaine Marshall, an attorney.

Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. is considered a solid favorite to shake off the challenge of state Rep. Robin Hayes, and both incumbents are favored in congressional races in the northeast.

The hottest local race is the battle for four seats on the Board of Commissioners in Dare County, where Republicans are trying to topple the Democratic stranglehold on the panel.
