A pair of goals by Johnathan Wilson and Hampton Roads Academy's unrelenting defense were enough to give the Navigators their third straight Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools soccer tournament championship 2-0 over Norfolk Academy.
Both teams upset the top two seeds and regular season co-champs Norfolk Collegiate and Norfolk Christian to gain the final.
Wilson, a senior who was named the game's most outstanding offensive player, scored in the 11th minute when he buried a shot in the back of the net by the Oaks' charging keeper Barrie Chang.
``It was so intense,'' Wilson said. ``I don't every remember it.''
But Chang did and denied Hampton Roads another as he picked up 12 saves to end the half. Chang, named the defensive player of the game, had 17 for the game.
Norfolk Academy managed only two shots in the first half, but came alive to start the second.
Phil Hucles and Vik Raman each threatened with breakaways, but were stymied by a quick and physical defense that seemed only to toy with Norfolk Academy's offensive efforts.
``It took us a little while to get started,'' said Chang, whose team was outshot 19-10 for the game. ``We played with a lot of heart in the second half. We just couldn't put the ball in. Things just didn't go our way.''
But in the waning minutes, everything fell perfectly for Hampton Roads Academy. by CNB
