TITLES GO TO LARKSPUR BOYS AND INDEPENDENCE GIRLS

Larkspur Middle School captured the boys championship in the Virginia Beach Middle School League citywide track championships for the third straight season.

The Lions finished the regular season tied for first place in the Southern Division with Kempsville after the two teams tied in the regular season meet. Independence finished the regular season unbeaten to take the Northern Division season championship, and finished second in the city meet by a point, 58-57.

Larkspur and Independence finished way ahead of the pack, as Great Neck, Kempsville and Lynnhaven tied for third with 22 points each.

The Independence girls also finished unbeaten in the regular season and captured the city championship running away from second-place Plaza 62-52.

The Larkspur boys were led by Tola Adewodu and Thomas Hargrove. Adewodu won titles in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, while Hargrove was the champion in the 800-meter run and the long jump.

Sean Slaughter led the Independence effort by winning the 400 and running a leg on the winning 1600 relay team. He also finished second in the 200 and third in the long jump.

Myron Goffigan paced Great Neck by finishing second in the 100, third in the 200 and fourth in the long jump.

Surprisingly, Independence won the girls title without having any individual champions. The Eagles did, however, win the 400 relay and the 800 medley relay (where two runners each run 100 meters, another runs 200 and the last one runs 400).

Members of the 400 relay championship team were Lisa Drake, Marcia King, Karina Jones and Candi Thompson. Jennifer Schaffer ran the 400 leg of the 800 medley run, while Drake and Thompson ran 100 each and Jones the 200 leg.

Thompson finished third in the 400 individual run, while Schaffer was fourth. Drake was second in the 200, while Jones was fourth. Thompson was third in the long jump and Drake was fifth.

Runnerup Plaza Middle School had three individual champions - Felicia Burnham in the 100, Krystina Williams in the 400, and Patricia Barth in the 800. Taneesha Cherry was second in the 400. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photos by D. KEVIN ELLIOTT
