I would like to commend Ann Sjoerdsma on her Oct. 21 column concerning the use of the Internet for educational purposes. Computers are a tool to be used to help us work, not think for us! The purpose of education is to teach people to think. Ms. Sjoerdsma is absolutely correct when she speaks about the cornerstones of education as the bases for moving on to science, etc.
Also, I am in complete agreement with her negative assessment of the Internet. One prominent author, Jack Trout, in his book The New Positioning, states: ``. . . the great information explosion is really an explosion of non-information. What the Internet hucksters won't tell you is that the Internet is an ocean of unedited data without any pretense of completeness.''
