I want to thank the newspaper staff, particularly Scott Harper, for the two articles Oct. 23 about the pollution by Smithfield Foods.
The sequence of events has been very informative: The political contributions to Governor Allen by the CEO; the mistakes in the reporting of ``no'' pollution in the Pagan River; the minimal enforcement efforts by DEQ and the state attorney general's office, and the commendable efforts by EPA.
Virginia is setting a poor example for what states can do better than the federal government. The response by the Allen administration, that EPA is primarily motivated by politics, is typical and a form of political double-talk.
