I am pleased at the Norfolk School Board's intense focus on literacy. However, I am concerned about the lack of time School Board members have spent in the schools with our children. Educational decisions are not appropriately made in the School Board conference room based on statistics, studies of other school systems and telescopic observations.
I suggest that the School Board devote significant time in school getting to know the children who are ``Norfolk public schools.'' When was the last time you saw a School Board member having a power lunch with a group of fourth-graders?
I recommend that each School Board member spend at least one day every semester in school. Until then, if you don't know our children, don't tell us what our children should know.
