ACCOUNTING
I. Wayne Cooper and Robert G. Bielat were named partners of Failes & Associates, P.C. in the firm's Virginia Beach office. They were formerly the principals of Cooper & Bielat, P.C. Both joined Failes & Associates when the two firms merged on Nov. 1.
ADVERTISING
Mahla Edwards Swinford was named public relations director at Primm & Co. in Norfolk. Since 1983, she has served as director of public relations, marketing and communications, and community relations and volunteer services for the American Red Cross, Mid-Atlantic Regional Blood Services in Norfolk.
BANKING
Richard R. Early was named senior vice president and senior trust officer of Bank of the Commonwealth. He most recently served as senior vice president and senior trust officer for the Bank of Lancaster in Kilmarnock, Va.
William C. Gill was named vice president/commercial lending at Resource Bank. He has more than 20 years of banking experience in business development, commercial lending, consumer and private banking and financial planning and administration.
EDUCATION
Jim Waldman was named executive director/chief executive officer of Cooper Career Institute of Virginia Beach. He will also continue to serve in that same capacity for the school's West Palm Beach headquarters. In this position, Waldman will oversee the marketing, admissions and student activities for the new career school. He was previously the president of Computer Dynamics Institute in Virginia Beach and the president of Enrollment Management Associates in Chesapeake and Pittsburgh.
Dan Roper was named president of Norfolk Christian Schools board of directors for the 1996-97 school year. Roper is director of military programs for the 3G Corp. in Williamsburg.
EMPLOYMENT
Barbara A. Farnsworth was named recruiter/sales for Western Staff Services in Newport News. She has 12 years in the temporary help service industry and retired from another national temporary service in 1995.
INSURANCE
James R. Wallhauser was promoted to state general agent at American Income Life Insurance Co. in Norfolk. He will be responsible for day-to-day operations for the Tidewater region. He was previously managing general agent. American Income Life is an international, union-label insurance company. The company is based in Waco, Texas, and has offices abroad and in 49 states in the U.S..
LAW
Deborah S. Prince, Thomas S. Berkley and John-Garrett Kemper were named associates with Heilig, McKenry, Fraim & Lollar in Norfolk. Prince was a law clerk to Judge J. Calvitt Clarke Jr., U.S. Eastern District of Virginia and a staff attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Norfolk and Newport News divisions. Her practice is in the areas of medical malpractice insurance defense and civil litigation. Berkley is a 1996 graduate of the Marshall-Wythe School of Law of the College of William and Mary. His practice is in the areas of civil litigation, personal injury defense, workers compensation and product liability. Kemper is also a 1996 graduate of Marshall-Wythe. He will practice in corporate law, real estate finance and development, and business litigation.
Kenneth R. Melvin and Lawrence H. Glanzer were named members of Marcus, Santoro & Kozak in Portsmouth. The firm will now be known as Marcus, Santoro, Kozak & Melvin. Melvin specializes in criminal law and personal injury. He is a state delegate representing Portsmouth and Chesapeake. Glanzer has 20 years of experience in the areas of debtor/creditor relations and commercial litigation. He was most recently a member of Pender & Coward.
SHIPBUILDING
Michael D. Marlow was named director of business development at Newport News Industrial Corp., a subsidiary of Newport News Shipbuilding. He was previously general manager of business development for Westinghouse's ITI MOVATS Inc. in Kennesaw, Ga.
TOURISM
Bill Mann was named sales manager for Norfolk's Convention and Visitors Bureau. He was assistant development manager with the City of Norfolk's department of economic development.
